The Story Behind Porter Poles

This past winter, I introduced my 6-year-old son to skiing. We spent as much time as we could on the slopes, and it quickly became one of our favourite things to do together. He learned fast and gained confidence with every trip to the hill. One thing, however, kept happening any time he went from from skis to walking. He couldn’t carry his poles and skis at the same time.

Every time we finished a run and started walking to the chalet or back to the car, he was constantly dropping his ski poles. He would stop to pick one up, take a few more steps, then drop the other. Before long, I found myself carrying both of our poles just to make the walk easier.

That moment sparked the idea for Porter Poles.

I created the first prototype from durable hard plastic ski accessory that remains attached to your ski poles. When you're ready to leave the slopes, simply clip the poles together and carry them comfortably as one. When it's time to ski again, unclip them and you're ready to go.

What started as a solution for my son, quickly spawned the realization that this product would benefit anyone who skis.

The name Porter Poles was inspired by the traditional role of a porter or bellhop, who carries luggage for guests. Because Porter Poles allows you to carry your skis and poles together in a similar “luggage-style” carry at your sides, the name was an obvious choice.
